Does it feel like life is passing you by?
When I was grinding in private equity, I was constantly consumed by the “next” deal. But after the deal closed, I started looking for that “next’“ deal, again.
Sound familiar?
If you’re a ‘type A’ achiever, you’re probably striving for that next deal, that next title, that next goal.
But could your focus on goals actually make you feel like life is passing by? Quite possibly…
Problem #1: You can’t be two places at once.
Goals exist in the future, but you live life in the present. And you can’t be in two places at once.
If you’re rarely present, you’ll feel like life’s passing you by.
So the solution is.. just “be present”.. right?
Problem #2: You don’t know how to be present.
If your name is Buddha or Yoda, you’ve got this solved. But if you’re like the rest of us, Problem #2 is a serious issue!
For example, if you’re often anxious, worried, or stressed, then you’re not present. Why? Because worrying means your attention is on the future, not here in the present.
Can I learn to be present? And why bother?
- Yes, you can learn to be present
- Being present helps you reach those goals (maybe for obvious reasons)
- More presence means:
- Your focus goes where you choose
- Increased ability to handle complex problems
- Ability to better manage your emotions, including stress
- Leading to clearer decision-making
For some of you, one great decision per year has massive financial ROI. Others want to feel present so that life can slow down a bit. What is it for you?
