Should we take 5-star vacations?

by | Sep 7, 2026

I’m writing this from Tibet, where some of the basics of daily life have been stripped away.

Food is simple. WiFi is spotty. And the bathroom situation isn’t exactly five-star.

But after a few days, something interesting happened: perspective shifts.

A hot shower IS a luxury. And unstained sheets have a wow factor.

It made me reflect on five-star vacations.

We spend thousands of dollars to experience environments where everything is much better than normal.

But when we return home, our normal lives may feel inadequate. Nothing changed, except our perspective.

I’m not against luxury vacations. But consider this: a 5-star hotel makes you appreciate.. the hotel.

A challenging journey, on the other hand, helps you appreciate your everyday, normal life.

Sounds like a life hack to me!

warmly,

P.S. Pic after Day 1 trek (5 hours) to 15,000+ feet with Mount Kailash in the background. The next day I would get my ass kicked by 19,000 feet of elevation and 6 hours of hiking uphill with an overweight backpack.

P.P.S. Yes, I was in Nepal / Tibet when the flash flood disaster occurred.

Our group was distraught that so many lives were lost, especially since many of those people were doing the exact same trek / pilgrimage to Mount Kailash. Additionally, many of us know Sadhguru and felt especially terrible for him and his foundation. They lost 80 people and absurdly, the internet was blaming him for losing people in a flash flood! For propriety, I am withholding my opinion on the intelligence of the general public.

Notably, the Chinese government had a border facility that was destroyed by the flash flood (as you saw on YouTube). Obviously, they would not have built that facility had the area been geographically unsafe. Like any accident, all was safe.. until it wasn’t.
